Free scores: Einzug der Gäste auf Wartburg, Elsa's Brautzug zum Münster, Hungarian Rhapsodie No. 6 Harmonies Poétiques et Religieuses

Franz Liszt was born on October 22, 1811 in Raiding, a Hungarian village. His father, Adam Liszt, played several instruments. As soon as Franz - whose real name was Ferenc - was able to sit on a piano bench, his father bought him a piano. Franz Liszt was six by then, a weak and sickly child.

Young Ferenc made excellent progress. After some time his parents asked Hummel to become Ferenc's teacher, but Hummel's fee was above their budget. Czerny, however, (who was a former pupil of Beethoven) was impressed by his talent and he became Liszt's piano teacher, without ever wanting any fee. Salieri, the former teacher of Beethoven and Schubert, taught Franz Liszt composition.

Impressed and influenced by the violin virtuoso Niccoló Paganini, Liszt wanted to write virtuoso and impressive music for his instrument, the pianoforte. In this he succeeded. Liszt became a succesful writer of transcriptions and paraphrases. Take for example his "Zwei Stücke aus R. Wagner's Tannhäuser und Lohengrin für das Pianoforte". Liszt was a Hungarian, even though he lived mostly in Weimar. His Hungarian Rhapsodies were based upon gipsy melodies Liszt must have heard when he was a child. We've found an old edition (1853) of Rhapsodie No. 6. Charles Haslinger in Vienna was the publisher. Download the free score in PDF format:

Hungarian Rhapsodie No. 6 in D flat Major (12 pages)

The solo piece with the title "Harmonies Poétiques et Religieuses" was written in 1833/34. We have an antique edition that doesn't belong to the serie with the same title, that was written several years later. It's possible this piece is the solo piece.

- Michael Short has let us know, that the edition we've republished is the first edition of "Harmonies Poétiques et Religieuses", written by Liszt in October 1833, revised in 1834 und published by Hofmeister in 1835. Michael Short is co-author of 'F. Liszt / List of Works', Rugginenti, Milan, 2004.
